The only advantage of Gel Lacquer in front of ordinary manicure is that it lasts longer, but at what price?

Ultraviolet lamps used for quick-drying varnish can actually increase the risk of skin cancer. Lamps emit ultraviolet A rays that are longer than the B rays and penetrate deeper into the skin. However, both UVA and UVB contribute to the development of skin melanoma . People who are sensitive to ultraviolet light are good at avoiding gel-coating. Although the lamps are used for a short period of time, the UV rays emitted by the lamps are four times stronger than those of the sun. Specialists recommend to wear sunscreen products on the hands when using a UV lamp.

The gel itself also damages the nail plate itself, because of its chemical composition, it hardens and damages the tile. It also causes yellowing and thinning of the nail, and other similar anomalies. In a study, the thickness of the nail plate was measured before and after the use of the gel varnish, and the results showed a large amount of thinning. Especially affected are fragile nails, as they can not withstand the acetone used to remove gel. While manicure is also advised to avoid cutting off the cuticles as bacteria and infections can spread .

Scientists say some gels are healthier than others. There are two types of gel – hard and soft. The first are traditional gels from the 80’s, which are impermeable to acetone, and the soft ones are the new ones that are easier to remove. Solids are believed to be more harmful, as they require more acetone .

Experts also warn that nail care products are particularly toxic. The chemical ingredients in nail care products contain formaldehyde that can cause cancer, but there are many others that endanger the endocrine system. Toluene, which produces a smooth nail coating, can affect the central nervous system. Varnishes can also cause other health problems such as thyroid dysfunction or allergic reactions.
